420 years ago, Shakespeare wrote one of the most famous tragedies of all time: Hamlet. It has been staged many times, filmed several times, the character of Hamlet has become an archetype and a fashion icon, in theatrical slang dramatic actors are even nicknamed Hamlets.
The Radost Theatre presents Hamlet in a slightly different way than usual: as a funeral musical inspired by the poetics of nomadic fairground puppeteers.
The story of Prince Hamlet, his murdered father, and widowed mother Gertrude, who married the brother of the late King Claudius, the story of the unfortunate Ophelia, her brother Laertes and their father Polonius, is told by a strange nomadic acting company, staging a puppet performance of Hamlet in an ancient translation. He sings all the famous monologues with his own musical accompaniment. It's a really weird acting company, indeed, one of its members a gravedigger! The actors immerse themselves so deep in their roles that they eventually succumb to the murderous madness of one of Shakespeare's bloodiest tragedies ...

The Radost Theatre began its professional activities in 1947, under the direction of Vladimír Matoušek. Pavel Hubička has been the theatre director since the summer of 2020.
