The performance was inspired by the life and work of the great painter Marc Chagall and his love for his wife, Bella, as the leading theme.
It is a story about fulfilment and harmony between two people, a hymn about the power of love that goes beyond the socio-political realities of the real world. Metaphorically treated historical events of the 20th century loom in the background, interpreted as an apocalyptical experience on the basis of Chagall’s own life story. The artist’s paintings are impersonated on stage, assuming three-dimensionality. Visual means of expression blend together harmoniously – actors in masks, puppets, multimedia. The great story of life featured on stage translates the language of painting into the language of the theatre of form with great perfection. Weightless personages, cubist forms, succulent colours, magical realism. The producers of this performance have spared no effort to re-create a world of Chagall art, with its typical motifs and mythology (two leading figures in the painter’s works – an ox and a rooster – will appear on stage). The director Adolf Weltschek says: Through the history of Chagall and Bella I want to share a specific love story – it is about people of flesh and blood. It is about love which acquires a metaphysical dimension. It becomes the love of Adam and Eve – a woman and a man. It is part of the cosmic order. In defiance of the omnipresent grumbling and theories on the impossibility of the meeting and building a relationship by people, I want to tell the story of a special union between man and woman, love that is stronger than death. Following Chagall’s footsteps I want to revive the mythology of love. It is a performance without words – created using colour, movement and music. This idea accounts for its uniqueness and the power of its poetic influence on our imagination. Her silence is mine. Her eyes – are mine. As if she knew me for long, as if she knew all about my childhood, about my present life, about my future; as if she watched over me, she explored me deeply, though I see her for the first time. I felt that it’s her, my wife to be. Her pale complexion, her eyes. How big and black they are! These are my eyes, my soul. (…) I have entered this new house and nothing will set us apart.
