Hra je dramatizací klasického díla francouzské literatury, jehož děj je zasazen do středověké Paříže, rozvíjí se v blízkosti chrámu Notre Dame a skrývá v sobě nespočet inspirací, dobových výjevů a reálií, složitých lidských charakterů a dramatických situací. Především je však velkým příběhem neopětované lásky zvoníka Quasimoda a cikánské dívky Esmeraldy, ale i ostatních hrdinů. Text románu je ideálním vý-
chodiskem pro poetiku Divadla ANPU. Vedle prvků klasické činohry dovoluje pracovat s loutkami, maskami, hudbou, pocity a nabízí dostatek příležitostí pro bohaté scénografické řešení. Výsledná podoba představení by měla vycházet z kontrastu mezi humorem a poezií, dramatickým napětím a sugestivní obrazově – zvukovou atmosférou. Ale hlavně chce dát prostor osobitému, otevřenému přístupu herců k divákům.
The play is a dramatisation of the classic work of French literature set in mediaeval Paris close to the cathedral of Notre Dame. It hides a multitude of inspirations, period spectacles and details, complex human characters and dramatic situations. Above all, however, it is the great story of the unrequited love of Quasimodo the bellringer for the gipsy girl Esmeralda, as well as that of the other heroes. The text of the novel formed an ideal starting point for the style of the ANPU theatre. In addition to elements of classical drama, it allows the theatre to work with puppets, masks, music and feelings, and also offers sufficient opportunities for exuberant set design. The ensuing form of the production is based on the contrast between humour and poetry, dramatic tension and an emotive atmosphere of imagery and sound. Above all, it allows a distinctive and open type of approach from the actors to the audience.
